As a brief introduction, this website is named GIRISI Golf Aids, i.e. GIRISIGolfAids.com
The term “GIRISI” has an interesting background story.
In 1991, a young golfer named John Daly joined the PGA tour. Daly had a unique approach to golf and significant natural talent, eventually becoming a winner on the tour. However, golf was only one aspect of his life; he was known for living life to the fullest. Although I do not have personal anecdotes about his life beyond golf, it is well-documented that Daly embraced all aspects of life enthusiastically.
Early in his career, Daly coined the slogan “Grip It and Rip It” to describe his powerful golf swing. His long drives often left spectators wondering how he managed such impressive hits. Later, Daly expanded his slogan to include “Sip It” when he launched a company that produced spiked iced tea drinks, resulting in “Grip It, Rip It, and Sip It.”
Around that time, my colleagues and I initiated an annual golfing tradition. Each spring, a group of us gathered at various golf resorts to play golf, enjoy beverages, and create lasting memories. Initially, the event lasted three nights and four days with six rounds of golf, but it eventually expanded to four nights and eight rounds. We have maintained this tradition every year, and in 2025, we will celebrate our 35th annual event.
We decided to name our annual golf event, and after much deliberation, we adopted John Daly’s slogan “Grip It, Rip It & Sip It” as it encapsulated our experience. Thus, GIRISI stands for “Grip It, Rip It, Sip It.”
To honor my esteemed golfing group, I have incorporated the GIRISI phrase into the title of my online Golf Aids website. As Paul Harvey would say, now you know the rest of the story.
Golf has always been a welcome escape from the busy everyday routine, a chance to unwind, and an opportunity to explore beautiful landscapes while enjoying a challenging sport. In this article I share my opinions and recommendations for some of the most memorable golf courses I’ve experienced over the years. Every course mentioned here holds a special place in my heart, offering a mix of fantastic play, eye-catching scenery, and a relaxed atmosphere that makes every round enjoyable.
The Basics: What Makes a Great Golf Course?
A great golf course goes beyond design—it offers a rewarding experience for players of all skill levels. The best courses share a few key traits:
Strategic Layout A well-designed course challenges you to think through each shot, making the game more engaging and helping you sharpen your skills.
Consistent Maintenance Smooth, well-kept greens and fairways ensure reliable play and reflect a course’s commitment to quality.
Natural Features Lakes, bunkers, and native landscaping not only add beauty but enhance the challenge in a memorable way.
Thoughtful Amenities Comfortable clubhouses, good food, and friendly, attentive staff turn a round of golf into a complete experience.
Course Recommendation #1: Exceptional Golf Experiences at Eagle Ridge Resort & Spa (Galena, IL)
Eagle Ridge Resort & Spa is one of the most enjoyable golf destinations I’ve experienced. With four beautifully renovated, award-winning courses totaling 63 holes, it blends classic design with modern playability. The rolling fairways and pristine greens offer just the right mix of challenge and relaxation, making each round memorable.
My friends and I have stayed in fully equipped homes right on the property—ranging from three to five bedrooms—which adds a vacation feel to every trip. The convenience of walking from your front door to the first tee, then winding down in comfort, is hard to beat.
Whether you’re playing one of the three 18-hole courses or the 9-hole layout, each round feels fresh. Add in the resort’s friendly, attentive staff, and it’s easy to see why Eagle Ridge remains a favorite among golfers.
Course Recommendation #2: A Tradition of Excellence with Lake Arrowhead Golf Courses (Nekoosa, WI)
Lake Arrowhead Golf Courses hold a special place in my heart, dating back to the early 1990s when my friends and I began our annual golf trips there. Back then, it was just one 18-hole course, and we’d mix things up by starting on different tees. Today, the property features two well-designed 18-hole courses that offer a great balance of challenge and playability—perfect for golfers of all skill levels.
What sets Lake Arrowhead apart is the way it blends natural beauty with top-notch maintenance. Recognized by Golf Digest with a 4½-star rating, the courses wind through sandy soil, pine forests, and scrub oak, creating a layout that feels both scenic and thoughtfully crafted. Each round here is as enjoyable as it is memorable.
Course Recommendation #3: THE CLUB AT LAC LA BELLE (Oconomowoc, WI)
The Morse family invites you to the historic course and clubhouse at Lac La Belle in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin. When we redesigned our course and Club in 2018, we dedicated ourselves to honoring the rich traditions and history of the past while reimagining our course and facilities for today & beyond.
We’re proud to have earned the distinction of The Top New Wisconsin Golf Course for 2021 by Golf Digest.
We are open to the public, on the links and off, in our fine dining and beautiful event spaces. The Club at Lac La Belle is a place to experience again and again.
On a personal note, I/Dennis have played and enjoyed this course several times and have the privilege of working at this beautiful course. It is a golfing experience like no other!

What really sets it apart is the friendly, knowledgeable staff who are always happy to offer helpful tips. Whether you’re fine-tuning your game or just out for a casual round with friends, Kettle Moraine strikes the perfect balance between fun and challenge.

Golf might be a leisure activity, but divots are serious business. Picture this: you’re on the green, lining up the perfect putt, only to be thrown off by a crater-sized dent. Annoying, right? Divots, no matter how small, can mess up the course and your game. This is why fixing them is not just basic etiquette but crucial for keeping things smooth and fair.
Golf courses put in a ton of effort to stay pristine. Maintaining that lush green look is no joke. Course managers rely on workers armed with handy tools dedicated to patching up the land. Professional-grade repair tools, some using old-school methods and some with modern spins, are the go-to for making sure the greens are in tip-top shape.
And it’s not just on the course level. Every golfer, whether a weekend warrior or a seasoned pro, needs to know their way around a divot tool. Damaged greens aren’t just a course manager’s headache but also a challenge for every golfer out there. Having your own tool keeps the game fair and the greens fabulous.
So next time you’re out there swinging, keep in mind that your tool isn’t just another accessory. It’s your key to keeping the course alive and kicking.
Traditional Vs Modern Divot Repair Tools: What Golf Courses and Pros Use
When it comes to maintaining a golf course, divot repair is at the heart of the task list. Golf course staff often use various tools tailored for this job, from simple pitchfork-style devices to more advanced equipment designed to maintain the lush beauty of the greens. But what exactly are these tools, and how do they compare to what individual golfers use? Let’s break it down.
Many golfers tote around their own divot tools, usually compact and conveniently attached to keychains. But do they get used as they should? The data shows a mixed bag. While enthusiasts and old-timers often whip out their personal tools to patch up the damage, there’s a portion of casual players who might forget or skip this step entirely. This variance in usage highlights the gap in understanding the long-term effects of leaving divots unmended, from playing surface quality to the damage on the course itself.
Professionals, on the other hand, are meticulous about maintaining the integrity of the greens. Endorsements for particular tools by pros aren’t unusual, often choosing gear that is efficient and effective under tournament conditions. They opt for gear that strikes a balance between tradition and tech, using tools that not only fix but also restore the green’s surface with minimal hassle.
Ball marks and divots suffer the wrath of powerful club swings, leaving behind marks that can disrupt even the most precise putt. For these repairs, professional golfers rely on tools that offer precision and care, closing up scars so the green stays uniformly smooth. Through their choices, they set a gold standard on how divots should be managed, marrying tradition with innovation in a way that everyday golfers can aspire to emulate.
Mastering the Art of Divot Repair: A Step-by-Step Guide
Fixing a divot the right way is like giving the course a bit of love back. Here’s a straightforward guide to help you nail it. First, grab your divot tool and head toward the damaged spot. The trick is not to lift the turf but to ease the edges back toward the center. Insert the tool just outside the mark and gently push inwards from all directions. This helps avoid damage to the grassroots and preserves the green.
One common mistake is prying the turf up, which can tear the roots. Instead, a gentle nudge is all you need to encourage the turf back into place. A light tamping with your putter afterward ensures the surface is level, letting the grass knit back together and maintain its firmness.
Proper divot repair isn’t just good manners; it’s about stewardship. Every successful fix contributes to a better playing surface for the one following in your footsteps. Plus, it keeps the course looking sharp. Players who regularly use correct techniques help sustain the grass’s health and prevent long-term damage from occurring.
An added bonus? The better the greens, the better your game flows. Seamless surfaces mean fewer unpredictable ball movements and smoother putts, keeping matches fair and enjoyable for everyone involved. So, next time you make your mark, take those few moments to mend it right. It’s a small act with significant impact, helping you play your part in the broader golfing community.
My recommendation: The Groundbreaking Spider Divot Tool
Having tried out the Spider Divot Tool myself, I can say it’s a game changer for golf enthusiasts. The ease it brings to repairing ball marks is truly unmatched. It’s more than just a tool—it’s practically a trusty sidekick every time I hit the links.
Out on the course, game-changing equipment is hard to miss, and the Spider Divot Tool is one such innovation. Its unique design steps away from the classic fold-up or two-pronged versions, offering something refreshingly different. For anyone who’s dealt with the tedious task of fixing ball marks, this tool introduces a twist—literally.
The Spider’s genius lies in its simplicity. Just pop off the protective cap, plunge the legs into the turf, and give it a slight pull with a twist. Instantly, the damaged area pops back into shape, thanks to its patented technology. It’s effective enough for a novice yet sophisticated enough to impress seasoned golfers.
Beyond its repair capabilities, the Spider’s design brings convenience. There’s no worry about sharp points snagging pockets or shedding dirt. Plus, it comes with a magnetic ball marker, making sure you have all essentials at hand. The marker also sits snug in the casing, a neat feature that makes it easy to lift and replace without fuss.
Incorporating this into your golf gear is not just about improving your game—it’s also about easing the maintenance load on golf courses. Knowing you’ve got a tool that merges ease and efficacy encourages responsible golfing habits. The Spider makes the case for new tech serving old sports, and doing it in style.
